Native Partners -
Effective January 1, 2008, Debora
Juarez (Blackfeet) and Gabe
Galanda (Round Valley) were elected to member (partner) status
with the firm. Debora chairs the firm's Tribal
Practice Team, which Gabe founded in 2002. Williams Kastner is
proud of the commitment the firm has made to Indian Country through
Debora and Gabe's election, recognizing the historic importance of
two Native lawyers having simultaneously made partner in one of
Seattle's oldest and biggest law firms.
Accolades - Gabe Galanda was recently
featured in a national, ABA Journal article titled, "Building
Your Own Practice." Gabe was also recently named a Rising Star
by Washington Law & Politics magazine, for the sixth time since
2000.
New Team Member -
The Tribal Practice Team welcomes Anthony
Broadman, who recently graduated from the University of Arizona
College of Law and passed the Washington State bar exam. During law
school, Anthony volunteered for the Arizona Justice Project and
clerked for the Coconino County Public Defender's Office. His tribal
practice focuses on tribal litigation, with a particular interest in
defending defamation actions arising in Indian Country, and Indian
gaming.

Gaming
Law Minefield - Las Vegas, NV (February 14-15, 2008). Gabe
Galanda will be moderating on a panel discussion about negotiating
tribal/local government agreements and development agreements. The
panel will discuss the latest trends in such agreements and the
traps awaiting the unwary.
Tax
Management for Tribes Conference - Seattle, WA (February 21-22,
2008). Sharon
Haensly will be speaking on the topic of "Resolving Tax Disputes
With Tribal Entities," covering contract issues, tribal
administrative and legal processes, as well as the rules governing
disputes over tribal taxes in federal court.
University of
Alberta Aboriginal Law Students' Association Speakers Series -
Edmonton, Alberta (March 4, 2008). Gabe Galanda will present a
lecture to First Nations laws students, comparing United States and
Canadian laws under which indigenous peoples can protect
off-reservation sacred sites, cultural property, ancestral graves
and other historic properties in those two countries.
Annual
Dispute Resolution Conference - Seattle, WA (April 3-5, 2008).
Gabe Galanda will be speaking about the legal and commercial effects
of tribal sovereign immunity on dispute resolution dynamics. This
session will review the legal ramifications of arbitration
agreements and the steps tribes are taking to becoming more
responsive to marketplace realities, while still protecting their
sovereign immunity.
