CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2009 8TH GRADE GRADUATING CLASS OF
Wa He Lut
Williams Kastner’s Tribal Practice Group congratulates the nine 8th grade graduates of Wa He Lut School!
On June 12, Williams Kastner Member Gabriel S. Galanda (Round Valley) had the privilege of delivering the school's commencement speech to a packed gymnasium of proud family members and friends. Gabe praised the graduates for the life skills and fortitude they have developed and for their accomplishments thus far. In addition, heeding Frank’s Landing matriarch and Wa He Lut founder, Maiselle Bridges, he stressed the need for the Native youth to overcome the odds and continue to further their education –- through high school and beyond.
Wa He Lut School has been in operation since 1974. The school sits upon the southeast banks of the Nisqually River near the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge just outside of Olympia and near the Puget Sound. The school, which provides Indian children early childhood through 8th grade education in a safe atmosphere filled with tribal culture and tradition, has been certified by Washington State for educational instruction since 1975. In 1980, U.S. Senator Warren Magnuson secured lands for the school’s present site from the U.S. Army and the current school building opened in 1998. The school name, Wa He Lut, is that of a Nisqually warrior and medicine man whose power flowed from thunder and lightning.
