Tribal Practice Group Created - We are pleased to announce that Williams Kastner's Board of Directors recently voted to form the Tribal Practice Group, formally constituting our team of lawyers who have been committed to representing tribal governments and businesses, Indian people and companies doing business in Indian Country, since 2002. The Tribal Practice Group joins the ranks of long-tenured firm practice groups such as Labor & Employment, Health Care and Business & Industries (all of whom also help our tribal clients). Seattle Member Debora Juarez (Blackfeet) will serve as Chair of the Tribal Practice Group. She and Member Gabe Galanda (Round Valley) are honored by the firm's gesture, and grateful to each and every one of our tribal clients for their part in this accomplishment.
New Tribal Sports & Entertainment Law Practice - The Tribal Practice Group is thrilled to announce the formation of our Tribal Sports & Entertainment Law Practice. Our group's clients include several tribes and tribal casinos in the West, an Indian-owned entertainment company, and several gaming and entertainment-related companies transacting in Indian Country. Other firm clients include sports figures and broadcasters, action sports stars, horse owners and jockeys, and amateur sports organizations.
We are excited to parlay the firm's experience representing such tribal and non-tribal sports and entertainment clients into this exciting new practice area. Our experience and capabilities include:
- Acquisition and sale of tribal sport franchises;
- Formation and operation of tribal athletic commissions under tribal law;
- Creation of joint sports and entertainment ventures;
Formation of Indian-owned sports and entertainment promotion companies;
- Management and regulation of boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), rodeo and action sports on the reservation;
- General business matters presented to tribal sports event and tournament councils;
- Contractual agreements, transactional counsel and agency for Native athletes;
- Advocacy against the use of Indian mascots by public and private sports teams; and
- Ensuring Indian athletes are provided equal opportunity with regard to recruitment, scholarships and education.
Debora Juarez and Seattle Member and veteran sports lawyer Randy Aliment are quoted in this New York Times Business Wire feature regarding our exciting new tribal practice area. Please contact us if you have any interest in this thriving, yet currently under-represented niche industry.
Gabe Galanda Featured in South Florida Sun-Sentinel - Seattle Member Gabe Galanda was featured last week in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, concerning the U.S. Interior Department's stance towards the Seminole Indian Tribe after the Tribe terminated a mobile home park ground lease. Gabe, commenting on the Department's sharp admonishment of the Tribe's actions, told the Fort Lauderdale, Florida newspaper that, "it's extremely unusual to see federal lawyers take this tact."
Julio Carranza Featured in Indian Country Today - Julio Carranza, a Tribal Practice Group litigation associate, was recently featured by Indian Country Today, regarding his appointment to the Washington State Supreme Court Commission on Children in Foster Care. He was also quoted by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer with regard to statewide foster care reform. As a foster care alumnus, Julio aspires to represent Indian families and children in various family law matters, as well as tribes in local ICWA cases.
4th Annual Emerging Northwest Tribal Economies CLE - Tulalip, WA (August 21-22, 2008). Gabe Galanda will again serve as co-chair of this dynamic conference presented by Northwest tribal leaders, lawyers and business and policy advisors. Debora Juarez will speak about trends in inter-tribal commerce and trade, and Sharon Haensly will discuss rights-of-way for utilities on tribal lands. The two-day program is designed to help Indian Country think beyond tribal governmental gaming, towards creating and sustaining long-term Indian economies that are less controversial and rooted in tribal values.
