Northwest Indian Law &
Business Blog Launched We are pleased to announce that
the Tribal Practice Group has begun a blog called, "Northwest
Indian Law & Business Advisor." There our team members will
periodically report on the latest legal and business issues facing
Indian Country. The blog will focus on legal decisions, political
developments and economic opportunities relevant to tribes' economic
development and diversification efforts. You'll want to bookmark it
or subscribe to an RSS
feed. We are also Tweeting (micro-blogging) daily at IndianLawyers,
and welcome you to follow our Tweets.
Inaugural Tribal Sports Law Summit a Home
Run! Our Tribal
Sports & Entertainment Team (who are also Tweeting, at IndianSports)
hosted the inaugural Tribal Sports Law & Business Conference
"Indian Country Goes Pro!" in Seattle, on May 15th. The seminar's
keynote speaker was Tex Hall, inductee into the North Dakota Amateur
Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Indian Athletic Association
Hall of Fame. In Hall's honor, Williams
Kastner donated all proceeds of the event to the Native American
Basketball Invitational (NABI). Hall is a NABI Board member. Other
speakers included Gina Northover-Moore, owner of Indian Rodeo News,
on tribal rodeo promotions; GinaMarie Scarpa and Gyasi Ross, both of
NABI, on NABI's inspirational efforts; Justin Ruggieri, counsel for
the Tohono O'dham's Desert Diamond Casino, on tribal athletic
commissions; and Randy
Aliment and Anthony
Broadman of Williams Kastner, on tribal sports agency and
franchise ownership, respectively.
Tribal 8(a) Contracting & Economic Stimulus
Program On June 8th, the Tribal
Practice Group hosted over 50 tribal business leaders from
throughout the country, for a program on SBA 8(a) contracting and
economic stimulus opportunities for tribes, particularly those with
construction companies. Speakers included Claire
Hur of Williams Kastner, on the basics of the SBA's 8(a) and
Mentor Protιgι programs; Pilar Thomas of Lewis & Roca in
Phoenix, on alternative 8(a) structures; Daucey Brewington of the
United Indians of All Tribes Foundations PTAC, on federal contract
procurement tips; and John Lanzillotta of Bold Concepts, on federal
contracting strategies and economic stimulus and construction

Debora Juarez Named to Super
Lawyers Tribal Practice Group Chair Debora
Juarez (Blackfeet) was named to Super Lawyers in the
arena of Native American Law, by Washington Law &
Politics magazine. She was previously chosen as a 2007 "Top
Lawyer" by Seattle Magazine.
Gabe Galanda Featured in Indian Country
Today In an "ICT asks an expert" column titled "To
Incorporate or Not to Incorporate," Gabe
Galanda (Round Valley) answered a number of questions about how
to form tribal government-owned businesses in order to fully
leverage tribal sovereignty and insulate the businesses from state
regulation and taxation, and outside legal or political
attack.

Annual Emerging Northwest Tribal Economies Seminar - Tulalip, WA
(August 13 - 14, 2009). Gabe Galanda will again serve as co-chair of
this dynamic conference presented by Northwest tribal leaders,
lawyers and business and policy advisors. Anthony Broadman will
co-present with Lance Morgan of Ho-Chunk, Inc., to provide a "Tribal
Taxation Update Local and National Issues: Gas, Tobacco, Property,
Sales and B&O Taxes." The two-day program is designed to help
Indian Country think beyond tribal governmental gaming, towards
creating and sustaining long-term Indian economies that are less
controversial and rooted in tribal values. For more details and

Annual Washington Construction Law Seminar - Seattle, WA
(September 17 - 18, 2009). Seattle Member Jerry
Creim and Associate Anthony Broadman will present on the unique
elements of contractual relations with tribal governments relative
to construction projects. Creim and Broadman's talk, entitled
"Contracting in Indian Country," will occur from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15
p.m. on Thursday, September 17th at the Washington State Convention
