Quanah Spencer Joins the
Tribal Practice Group — In July, Quanah
Spencer, an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and former
policy counsel for NCAI and the Coeur d'Alene and Yakama Tribes,
joined the firm as Of Counsel. He is spearheading the firm's new Law,
Legislative Affairs & Government Practice Team. Quanah
recently spoke at the 5th Annual Emerging Tribal Economies
Seminar regarding the millions of dollars in federal economic
stimulus opportunities that are currently available to Indian

Debora Juarez Emcees NCAIED Event —
Tribal Practice Group Chair and Seattle Member Debora
Juarez (Blackfeet) served as the emcee for the National Center
of American Indian Economic Development's (NCAIED) 7th Annual Native
American Procurement Conference at the Tulalip Resort in August.
Debora's recent scholarship in Indian Country Today on
inter-tribal trade—or what she calls "kinship
commerce"—dovetails with NCAIED's Native-to-Native (N2N)
business initiative. She and the Tribal Practice Group are big
supporters of the National Center and N2N commerce. Debora will also
deliver the keynote address on kinship commerce, to the Nez Perce
Economic Summit in Lewiston on September 10th (details below).
Gabe Galanda Named to 40 Under 40
List – Twice — Seattle Member Gabe
Galanda (Round Valley) was recently named to two "40 Under 40"
lists of emerging leaders. He was first recognized by the Puget
Sound Business Journal, and more recently by NCAIED. The
National Center's list is the inaugural honoring of the "Native
American 40 Under 40." Both groups will recognize him the week
of September 14, 2009, in Seattle and Tulsa respectively. Gabe was
also recently featured in an Oregon Bar Bulletin article, "Myths,
History & Destiny," regarding the emergence of Indian law
and Native lawyers.

Broadman Delivers Indian Tax Update — At the 5th Annual
Emerging Tribal Economies Seminar, Seattle Associate Anthony
Broadman delivered an update on recent developments in the arena
of federal Indian tax law.

Sports Law Team Featured in Indian Country Today —
In an article by Richard Walker titled, "Opening
the doors wide for Native athletes," our team's inaugural Tribal
Sports Law & Business Conference – "Indian Country Goes Pro!" –
was highlighted. The seminar's keynote speaker was Tex Hall,
inductee into the North Dakota Amateur Basketball Hall of Fame and
the National Indian Athletic Association Hall of Fame. The article

Annual Finance Conference for Indian Country — Albuquerque, NM
(September 8-10, 2009). Gabe Galanda will be addressing the Native
American Financial Officers Association (NAFOA) regarding Indian
Country's $300 million self-insurance opportunity. On September 10th
at 9:00 a.m., he will participate on a panel titled, " Leveraging
Tribal Self-Insurance Possibilities," regarding tribal self-funded
or captive insurance, based upon his recent two-part Indian
Country Today series, "Holding Big Insurance Captive" (Part
1 and Part
2).
Nez
Perce Economic Summit — Lewiston, ID (September 10 - 11, 2009).
Debora Juarez and Quanah Spencer will be speaking at this summit
hosted by Nez Perce Tribal Enterprises' Research & Development
Office. Debora will be delivering the Keynote Address, and both she
and Quanah will be participating on a panel titled, "Re-establishing
Inter-Tribal Trade Ties." The Nez Perce Tribe, like the Yakama
Nation, enjoys a guaranteed Treaty right to travel for purpose of
commerce and trade, free of state regulation.
NCAIED's
INRPO Conference — Tulsa, OK (September 17 - 18, 2009). Quanah
Spencer will be speaking with the likes of NCAIED Chairwoman
Margo Gray-Proctor, Tex Hall and Lance Morgan on the "Native to
Native (N2N) Business Today" panel, on September 17th at 2:00
p.m.

Annual Washington Construction Law Seminar — Seattle, WA
(September 17 - 18, 2009). Seattle Member Jerry
Creim and Associate Anthony Broadman will present on the unique
elements of contractual relations with tribal governments relative
to construction projects. Creim and Broadman's talk, entitled
"Contracting in Indian Country," will occur from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15
p.m. on September 17th at the Washington State Convention &
Trade Center.
