Williams Kastner in the News

Hidden Oaks Casino - Williams Kastner's Tribal Practice Team is honored to have assisted the Round Valley Indian Tribes with the development of the recently opened Hidden Oaks Casino in Covelo, California. The casino is the first of many nation building efforts the Tribes have underway. Gabe Galanda (a Round Valley tribal member), Debora Juarez, Julio Carranza and Sharon Haensly helped the Tribes.

Tribal Welcome - On October 19, 2007, the firm's Education Practice Team and Tribal Practice Team proudly sponsored the Northwest Indian community to welcome and honor Antioch University's new President, Dr. Cassandra Manuelito-Kerkvliet, the first American Indian woman to serve as president of an accredited non-tribal university. Dr. Cassandra Manuelito-Kerkvliet was honored by the tribal song and dancing of the Quinault Ocean Navigators as well as a Lummi canoe society. The celebration also included an honoring of Williams Kastner tribal probate lawyer Scott Henrie, by the Capoeman Family of the Quinault Nation.

State Gaming Rulemakings - Dave Wiley, Debora Juarez and Gabe Galanda, represented Bally Technologies in a successful rulemaking effort before the Washington State Gambling Commission. Thanks to the efforts of this attorney team, the agency maintained protective order criteria to help prevent the disclosure of gaming device manufacturers' trade secrets and tribal casinos' proprietary information, and enhanced a presiding officer's ability to extend full faith and credit to tribal gaming laws.

National Recognition - Gabe Galanda was recently named for inclusion in the 25th edition of The Best Lawyers in America, as one of the best attorneys in the country specializing in the practice of Indian law. Gabe was also recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article regarding the legal and business implications of the tribal exercise of sovereign immunity in tort litigation, "Plaintiffs Suing U.S. Tribes Can't Get Their Day in Court."
