Debora
Juarez, Chair of the Tribal Practice Team, was recently quoted
by the Puget Sound Business Journal in an article titled,"Indian
Nations Provide New Client Base for Firms." Quoting Debora, the
article explains: "Tribal legal needs have exploded in the years
since the 'BC' (before casinos) days, noted veteran tribal practice
attorney (and Blackfeet Nation member) Debora Juarez. . . . Some are
focused on infrastructure development, others on oil, gas and
mineral rights. 'It now goes way beyond treaty enforcement and
protection of natural resources.'"
Gabe
Galanda was appointed Chair of the Gaming Law Committee to the
American Bar Association's (ABA) Business Law Section, in August.
Gabe also recently co-authored the Tribal Court Litigation chapter
to a best-selling corporate litigation desk book published by the
ABA. Through his active leadership and involvement, Gabe seeks to
help provide a voice for Native lawyers, Indian gaming attorneys and
Indian Country within the 400,000-member American Bar Association.
Julio
Carranza successfully obtained a dismissal on behalf of a
tribally-owned company that was sued in Tulalip Tribal Court in a
personal injury action arising at the Tulalip Casino. Julio also
recently addressed the National Inter-tribal Tax Alliance at its 9th
Annual Meeting in Oklahoma, with regard to developments in Northwest
tribal cigarette taxation litigation and policy.
Gabe Galanda
recently participated in a broadcast forum hosted by Native Nations
Institute Radio, which convened a group of tribal leaders and Indian
law experts in Tucson to discuss tribal sovereign immunity and the
need for Native nations to approach the issue strategically. Gabe
spoke along with tribal visionaries Citizen Potawatomi Nation
Chairman Rocky Barrett, University of Arizona law professor Rob
Williams, and Ho-Chunk, Inc. CEO Lance Morgan. To watch this forum

& Advocates Series- Tucson, AZ (September 20, 2007). Gabe
Galanda will deliver a lecture at the University of Arizona James E.
Rogers College of Law titled,"Off-Reservation Cultural Property
Protection: the 21st Century's 'Indian Wars.'" He will discuss legal
strategies for tribal governments to protect off-reservation sacred
sites, cultural property, Indian graves and other historic
properties.
Tribal
Welcoming Ceremony for New Antioch University President -
Seattle, WA (October 19, 2007). Williams Kastner's Education
Practice Group and Tribal Practice Team will be welcoming and
honoring Antioch University's new President, Dr. Cassandra
Manuelito-Kerkvliet. Dr. Manuelito-Kerkvliet is the first American
Indian woman to serve as president of an accredited non-tribal
